Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Birmingham Metro Home Exterior

Get your Birmingham home ready for spring with our essential exterior cleaning checklist. Learn how to protect your roof, siding, and concrete from Alabama's humidity.

Living in the Birmingham metro area, we all know that spring doesn't just bring flowers—it brings a thick layer of yellow pollen, Alabama humidity, and the start of the summer thunderstorm season. For homeowners in Columbiana, Alabaster, and throughout Shelby County, this is the time of year when our homes really start to show the wear and tear of the winter months. A little maintenance now goes a long way in protecting your biggest investment and keeping your curb appeal high.

My name is Mack Slaughter, and at The MS. Contracting, I spend my days helping neighbors get their homes back in shape. I’ve put together this straightforward checklist to help you prioritize your exterior cleaning this season. Taking these steps won't just make the house look better; it will actually extend the life of your building materials.

1. Inspect Your Roof for 'Gloeocapsa Magma'

If you look up at your roof and see dark, vertical streaks that look like soot or coal dust, you aren't looking at dirt. You are likely looking at a type of hardy algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. This is incredibly common in Alabama because of our high humidity levels. The algae feeds on the limestone filler in your shingles, which can lead to premature shingle loss and higher cooling costs in the summer.

  • What to look for: Black streaks on the north-facing slopes or shaded areas of the roof.
  • The Fix: Avoid high-pressure washing. You need a professional soft wash roof cleaning. This involves using specialized, biodegradable solutions that kill the algae at the root without damaging the delicate granules on your shingles.

2. Wash Away the Winter Grime from Your Siding

Whether you have vinyl, brick, or Hardie board siding, the winter leaves behind a film of dust and organic growth. If you notice green tinting on the side of your house, that’s mildew starting to take hold. If left alone, it can eventually work its way behind the siding or into the wood trim.

Spring is the ideal time for a full house wash. Similar to the roof, I recommend a soft wash approach here. Blasting your siding with high-pressure water can force moisture into your wall cavities, trap water behind the weep holes, and even strip paint. A gentle chemical application followed by a low-pressure rinse is the safest way to get that 'new house' look again.

3. Refresh Your Concrete Surfaces

Between the red clay we have here in central Alabama and the constant cycle of rain, our driveways and sidewalks take a beating. Over the winter, concrete becomes porous and holds onto moisture, allowing black mold and slick moss to grow. This isn't just an eyesore; it’s a slip hazard, especially when the spring rains hit.

  • Driveways: Look for dark patches or orange battery acid/rust stains.
  • Walkways: Check for moss growth in the cracks or joints.
  • Patios: Look for food stains or leaf tannins that may have sat since the fall.

For concrete, a professional pressure washing setup with a surface cleaner is usually the best bet. It provides an even, deep clean that you just can't get with a standard garden hose or a small electric pressure washer.

4. Clear Your Gutters and Downspouts

You probably did a big cleaning back in the fall, but winter storms often blow stray branches and leftover leaves back into your gutters. With the heavy spring rains coming, your gutters need to be clear to move water away from your foundation. While you’re checking the gutters, take a look at the 'tiger stripes'—those dark lines on the outside of the gutter troughs. A good house wash can usually remove these and make your gutters look freshly painted.

5. Don't Forget the Windows and Trim

Once the pollen drop finally slows down, giving your windows a good rinse and wiping down the frames makes a world of difference in how much light gets into your home. Check your wooden window sills for soft spots or peeling paint. Catching these small issues in the spring prevents them from turning into expensive rot repairs by the time autumn rolls around again.

Cleaning your home's exterior shouldn't feel like an overwhelming chore, but I know that most homeowners in our area have busy schedules.
