Our Alabama weather is exactly what this particular algae loves. Gloeocapsa Magma thrives in warm, moist environments. Modern asphalt shingles contain a lot of limestone as a filler. This limestone gives the shingles weight and durability, but it also happens to be the primary food source for this algae. Once a few spores land on your roof, they start to eat that limestone filler and spread downward, which is what creates those long, dark streaks. Because the north-facing side of your home gets the most shade and stays damp longer, that is usually where you will see the growth start first.

The Danger of High-Pressure Washing

When most people see a dirty surface, their first instinct is to grab a pressure washer and blast it off. While that works great for a concrete driveway, it is the worst thing you can do for a roof. Your shingles are covered in small ceramic granules that protect the asphalt from the sun's UV rays. Using high pressure on those shingles is like using a sandpaper power tool on your roof.
